Academic Programs: MBA: The Program

A two-year launch to a lifetime career

The heart of our MBA program is personal attention and technical prowess. No academic regimen has any better grasp of today's new technology, and our high faculty-to-student ratio makes the interpersonal exchange between professors and students hard to match. History tells us that great achievement requires great collaboration, and the Ole Miss program places a premium on teamwork. In learning to work toward consensus, students learn from each other perhaps as much as from any other source.

Students move through year one of the program as a group or "cohort," beginning in August with the MBA Business Foundations course. An intensive 3-credit course, it is designed to develop and refresh essential skills in the fundamental areas of business management.

"The Ole Miss MBA program encourages students to be involved in activities outside of the classroom.  By participating on the MBA’s intramural flag football and soccer teams, I have learned the importance of balancing work and play, not to mention the outlet these activities have provided me to get to know my classmates in a non-classroom setting."

MBA Class of 2003

In the fall semester of the first year, students enroll in MBA Skills and Business Finance and Operations, which are designed to develop advanced capabilities in math, statistics, finance, and accounting. Two other fall courses are cross-functional. Mobilizing Technology in the Modern Business and Business Environment address MIS applications and managerial economics.

The spring semester brings Business Decision Making, Business Planning and Entrepreneurship, Managing Operations Through the Life Cycle, and MBA Project Analysis. They foster the development of practical solutions to real business problems by using cases and team projects.

Students begin year two, in most cases, following a summer internship. In the second fall semester, all students enroll in an integrative capstone course along with courses in their area of specialization. Each student has the opportunity to construct an area of specialization tailored to his or her individual goals.

Real decision-making experience and extensive participation in group projects involving actual business organizations are the cornerstones of this innovative curriculum. Employers want MBA graduates who will make an immediate and lasting contribution to the value of their companies. They want relevant experience and the ability to act decisively in a competitive and constantly changing global business environment. The Ole Miss MBA program delivers these working assets.
