         One Long Setting Up

Hours we spent setting them up:
Thousands of green plastic men.

It took so long to set them up 
We never got to playing,

And wouldn't have known how to 
If we had.  But Brendan's basement 

Was the best for making war, or,  
The moment just before.  The cold, 

Gray painted floor was where we waged
Our still death battles. Then his 

Mom would call the generals in
To dine and talk about the men

While they stood frozen in the field,
Without orders, or any end

In sight to this fantastically
Unfinished fight.  What disciplined

Imaginations we had 
Back then, in childhood:

One long setting up.
